Byron White, 67

Byron E. White was born March 15, 1944, in Igloo, S.D. to Ralph and Thelma (Baldwin) white. he graduated from Tooele High School and attended Black Hills State College in Spearfish, S.D. During this time he married Kathleen Cooper. In 1971, Byron and Kathleen moved to Marshall, Minn., where they resided for many years. Byron and Kathleen had two daughter; Jodi (White) and Nikki (White) Burghduff. While in Marshall, Byron worked for Lockwood Motors car dealership until his retirement in 2000. In 1979, Byron and Kathleen divorced. Kathleen and the daughters moved back to South Dakota. In 1989, Byron married Katherine Haney. Katherine had a daughter, Alissa Haney. In 1991, Katherine passed away of cancer. After Katherine’s death, Byron opted to adopt Alissa, and in 1993 Alissa Haney became Alissa Haney-White. In 2001, Byron moved to Broken Bow, where he resided until his death. During this time in Broken Bow, he was employed with the city of Broken Bow as the Permits Officer. He also worked in the utilities office part-time, and worked for the Tumbleweed Cafe where he was a friend to many and a stranger to few. Byron resided with Barb Wells, who was a very special friend. Byron passed away July 29, 2011, in Broken Bow, at the age of 67, surrounded by many family members. Survivors include daughters, Jodi White (Kevin Ohme), Nikki (Cleo) Burghduff, and Alissa Haney-White; grandchildren, Courtney Dardis, Cody McConville and Brook McConville; sister, Jacqie Schnell, and nephew Steven Schnell, both of Bakersfield, Calif. He is also survived by special friend, Barb Wells, and her children, Carmen (Anson) Bumgarner, Carla (Chuck) Davis, Carey (Jim) Haskell, Carlie (Kim) Wells, and Corrine Wells-Duryea. He was adopted grandpa to Alex Davis, Scott Davis, Sawyer Bumgarner, Ida Mae Bumgarner, Jace Haskell, Cyrus Wells, Conner Wells, Cal Wells, Coby Wells, Drew Ducker and Preston Ducker. Funeral services were Tuesday, Aug. 2, in Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with Kathy Salts officiating. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated later. Interment was in the Broken Bow Cemetery. Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow was in charge of arrangements.Published in Custer County Chief, Aug. 4, 2011
