Elizabeth "Bette" Irwin, 89

Elizabeth “Bette” Violet Irwin, 89, of Gering, went to be with her Lord Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011, at Northfield Villa Retirement Community in Gering. A Celebration of Life service was held Feb. 1, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church in Gering with Pastor Lauren Ekdahl officiating. Inurnment took place at Feb. 2, at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church of Gering. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.geringchapel. com. Gering Memorial Chapel & Cremation Services are assisting the family with arrangements. Bette was born May 27, 1921, in Washington, N.J. to John R. and Violet (Rockwell) Felver. Later the family moved to Phillipsburg, N.J., where she attended school and graduated from high school. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Phillipsburg. She graduated from Muhlenberg Hospital School of Nursing in Plainfield, N.J. in 1942, and became a registered nurse. She was married to James K. Irwin, a Methodist Minister May 26, 1943, in New Jersey. In June, 1945, they moved to Nebraska, where they served churches in the Nebraska Conference of the United Methodist Church until 1982. They moved to Gering in 1974. To this union six children were born: James Jr., Christine Irwin, David Irwin, Stephen Irwin, Mary Irwin and Beth Kumpost. She is survived by her children: James Jr. (Francine) Irwin of Columbus, Christine Irwin of Gering, David Irwin of Sumner, Stephen Irwin of Grand Island, Mary Irwin of Gering, and Beth (David) Kumpost of Anchorage, Alaska; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, John R. Felver, Jr of St. Louis, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, James K. Irwin (Dec. 31, 2004), her parents, and brothers, Gale Felver and Robert Felver.
