Lee Glidden, 90

Lee Glidden, 90, of St. Paul died Friday, June 29, 2012 at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island. Lee’s wishes were to be cremated. A celebration of life service was Tuesday, July 2, at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. Inurnment was in the Dunning Cemetery in Dunning. Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice.Lee was born May 28, 1922, in Thomas County, to Frank T. and Iva May (Rarick) Glidden. He grew up on the family homestead in Thomas County, where he attended country school and then graduated from Dunning High School in 1939. He worked as a Bunkhouse Cowboy for several Sandhill ranches. Lee enlisted into the United States Navy Reserves Jan. 20, 1943, as an aviation cadet and served as a fighter pilot of a carrier, Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged Jan. 15, 1946, and returned to the Dunning area. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Platz Jan. 20, 1950, at Dunning, and one daughter joined two step-daughters. The family moved to Greeley County in 1966, and then to Howard County in 1973, where they made their home.In 2006, the couple moved into the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island. He was a member of the American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul and the VFW Post 10752 of St. Paul. Lee enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He had a love for rodeos and especially calf roping, where he took family, friends and horses to the events. He also loved his family reunions and family get-togethers. He is survived by two daughters, Kathy and Ray Evans of Grand Island, and Ella and Danny McCray of St. Paul; four grandchildren; 12 great- grandchildren, and two great- great-grandchildren.Lee is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy on March 22, 2007; a daughter, Orilla Jensen; granddaughter, Mindy Green; his brothers, Verne, Jim, Jack and Jean “Jiggs” Glidden, and a sister Marjorie Bednar.Condolences and tributes for Lee may be signed at www.jacobsengreenway.com.Published in Custer County Chief, July 5, 2012
