Norman 'Pete' Peterson, 80

Norman D. “Pete” Peterson, 80, of Kearney died Sunday, April 20, 2014, at the Rose Lane Nursing Home in Loup City. Services were Saturday, April 26, at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney with Pastor Dean Pofahl officiating. Military rites were rendered immediately following services at the funeral home by the Kearney American Legion Post 52, the Kearney V.F.W. Post 759 and the Nebraska National Guard Funeral Honors Team. Burial followed at the Lone Tree Cemetery near Weissert. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer’s research, care of the family. Pete was born Aug. 1, 1933, in Weissert, to Pete C. and Wilma (Barnes) Peterson. He married Doris Smith Sept. 1, 1955, in Broken Bow. He grew up on the farm at Weissert and attended school at Weissert and Broken Bow. He was drafted into the Army in 1955, and served in Germany until being honorably discharged in 1957. For his love of the automobile he came to Kearney and began working at the GM Dealership. He later opened his own shop in Taylor for a short time before returning to work in Kearney. In the 80’s he opened his own business in Kearney, Pete’s Town & Country, which he ran until he retired. He worked for Dave Waggoner Plumbing for the remainder of his working years. In the 60’s he enjoyed car racing at the dirt tracks in Nebraska and Kansas. He was severely burned in 1969 while racing at the Kearney Raceway. Pete enjoyed Nascar and classic country music. He always considered everyone a friend. He had a special place in his heart for his kitty, Sammy. He will be greatly missed by all. Surviving relatives include his wife, Doris of Kearney; children, Gregory and Carla Peterson of Kearney, E. Troy Peterson and his soul mate Olive of San Diego, Calif., Jody and Karen Peterson of Kearney, and Jeffery and Jeri Peterson of Kearney; grandchildren, Michel Peterson and his wife Amy of Amherst, Nathan Peterson of Kearney, Hayden Peterson of Kearney, Shelby Peterson of Kearney, Mranda Peterson of Kearney, Ariah Peterson of San Diego, Calif., and Jasmine DeGuzman of San Diego, Calif.; step-grandchild, Larry Debaun of Kearney; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Brayden Peterson both of Amherst; brother, Melvin and Donnah Peterson of Weissert; sister, Jeanette Lacy of Kearney; many nieces and nephews.Published in Custer County Chief, May 1, 2014
